RICHARD HOLLOWAY is a writer, with twenty-five titles to his name, and broadcaster. He was Bishop of Edinburgh and Gresham Professor of Divinity till 2000. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and recently presented a BBC television series on the turbulent history of Scottish Christianity called The Sword and the Cross. At the moment, like just about everyone else in Scotland, he is trying to write a novel.

“There does seem to be a sense of this happening to a lot of people. I think that they're discovering that the prison door was never locked. I don't quite know what it is that made them get up and push it, and see it swinging open and discover that all the prison guards had disappeared. There is a sense of having been a prisoner to one's delusions and of finally realizing that the snake is just a rope."
