LAMA SURYA DAS is one of the foremost Western lamas and Buddhist teachers, and founder of the Dzogchen Meditation Centers. He twice completed the traditional three-year, three-month, three-day Tibetan meditation retreats at his teacher’s monastery cloister.
Lama Surya Das is the author of the best-selling Awakening the Buddha Within and five other books, as well as innumerable published essays. A poet and translator, he is a regular columnist on Beliefnet.com, leads retreats around the world, and is active in interfaith dialogue and charitable work in Asian countries. He lived in the Himalayas for fifteen years, and with his Holiness the Dalai Lama founded the Western Buddhist Teachers Conferences.
The Dzogchen Center conducts meditation retreats, workshops, classes, and other activities in the dzogchen tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, including a hundred-day annual retreat at the Dzogchen Retreat Center outside Austin, Texas. Founded by Lama Surya Das in 1991, it is dedicated to transmission and transformation via Buddhist ethics, wisdom practices, and compassionate action in a manner accessible to all.
